I read the most amazing book called "Persepolis." About a week ago, I couldn't put it down! It was a graphic novel (and it was required reading in AP Lang. & Comp, oh my God, I love this class.) that's about a young girl growing up in Iran.

It's an interesting topic about "the veil" and how oppressed the main character feels, along with her family and friends. It's all a true story and it's heart-wrenching. I believe there's a sequel, as well.

I drew this with "the veil" in mind. Now in the story it's not so much covering. I don't know if Iran covers this much up now or not, though. But she mentioned in the story that the modern woman in Iran would have a little hair showing outside of the veil. Look at this picture and honestly think about how "modern" this woman is.

Maybe a better way to explain it would be the fact that in Iran, hair is supposed to arouse men quite a bit. Like showing a lot of leg, cleavage, the whole thing. If this woman lived in America she would probably not wear this veil and let her hair go out as much as she wanted it to. And to think that we can gather that from the fact that she only has a few strands showing.

I hear that here in the U.S. a few cops have made comments that go something like: "Well, if women didn't dress in such a skimpy way they wouldn't get raped." And I bet there's some truth to that. But now are you going to tell me that there isn't a single rape in Iran? Well, that's interesting since they can't execute virgins... now how would you fix that if the person you wanted to execute was a virgin?

anyway, it's early... why, it's almost five in the morning (oh look, it is 5AM) and I haven't slept yet.
I really loved drawing this and using the smudge tool to make the lines look almost like there was some sort of odd downpour of maybe tears or just something spilled, I don't know.
